Assistant Secretary for Congressional Relations Krysta Harden speaks to the more than 100 agricultural retailers present for the 2010 Environmental Respect Awards Stewardship Forum in Washington, D.C.

Environmental Respect winners were treated to a busy lineup of speakers Thursday morning. Representing the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Congressional Relations was Krysta Harden, assistant secretary for congressional relations. Harden's forward view of U.S. policy was followed by Jason Clay, senior vice president of market transformation for the World Wildlife Fund. Clay examined the effects of a rising population on global food supply and brought into light some hard facts about the importance of environmental stewardship.

Dennis Avery took the podium Thursday morning as well. Avery, director of the Center for Global Food Issues at the Hudson Institute, discussed the security of food supply and the sustainability of world agriculture. From this global view, sessions then narrowed in on specific areas of the world as each of the 2010 Environmental Respect Award winners took the stage, explaining their business and individual stewardship challenges. 

Capping off Thursday evening was the 20th Anniversary Capitol Hill Reception in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol Building. More than 100 retailers and industry leaders were present to honor the 2010 Environmental Respect Award U.S. and international winners at the ceremony. DuPont's Carol Palmiotto spoke on the importance of a commitment to environmental safety and announced the 2010 U.S. National Winner, Willard Agri-Service of Greenwood, DE. The winning businesses and DuPont representatives celebrated the 20th year of honoring agriculture's environmentalists at a special dinner on the rooftop of 101 Constitution Ave., across the street from the U.S. Capitol Building.
