Washington 2010: Friday, July 23
The Environmental Respect Awards group spent the day in Wilmington hearing about DuPont's long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and viewing DuPont's facilities. First on the list was Longwood Gardens, a horticultural display that was the legacy of Pierre S. du Pont. The gardens are some of the greatest in the world and strive to inspire through excellence in garden design, horticulture and education.
Some retailers chose to see DuPont's Hagley Museum, located on 235 acres along the banks of the Brandywine River in Wilmington, the museum is the site of the gunpowder works founded by E.I. du Pont in 1802. This example of early American industry includes restored mills, a workers' community, and the ancestral home and gardens of the du Pont family. Attendees also had the choice to view the Stine-Haskell Research facility. This property, located on approximately 535 acres in Wilmington, DE, houses much of DuPont's scientific research.
The week closed on Friday evening at DuPont Country Club, where attendees were treated to dinner, an overview of the week, a look at DuPont's core values and goals for the future, and the naming of the very first Environmental Respect Awards Spirit of Respect winner: The McGregor Company of Grangeville, WA.
