Farmers Union Oil Co. - Bridgewater, SD
Mother Nature visited this Bridgewater, SD, facility on June 16, 1992, and tested the rationale for containment. She didn’t bother to read labels before whipping up her own brew of 3,200 gallons of missed bulk chemicals and water.
The tornado that struck the co-op’s brand new mixing and loading facility brought total destruction, but has since been rebuilt.
“We had an emergency plan for the procedures we were to follow,” explained Dane Gillan, plant manager. “Every agency was notified and by the next morning the clean-up procedures were started.”
Despite strong winds, not a drop of “Mother Nature’s brew” landed outside of the containment area.
