Willard Agri-Service - Marion, PA

Protecting and preserving the natural resources of the land is not only important to Plant Manager Pete Surgeon, Willard Agri-Service, Inc., Marion, PA, as a businessperson, but a landowner, and a father.

"We try to be good representatives of agriculture and the farmers," says Surgeon. "They [the community] relate to the farmers."

Willard also participates in "day on the farm" events to promote agriculture to the community. Pennsylvania's Department of Agriculture recognizes the plant as the state's No. 1 pesticide container recycling participant of 2002. Within a metal building are stainless steel storage tanks, used to house the chemicals that will be mixed and transported to the field.

"This is what makes the Marion facility unique," Surgeon says. "We blend the bulk herbicides for each applicator load here at the plant in a precisely automated process and transport the bulk herbicide mixture in stainless steel Department of Transportation approved chemical containers separately from the fertilizer. At the farm, the pesticide mixture and fluid fertilizer are combined and off-loaded onto the field applicator in a closed process."
